3 acts of morning mindfulness

ashford castle autumn morningOften in the mornings we go into auto mode with our routines and just get up and boom, boom, boom through what must be done to get out the door.  That is the great thing about mindfulness – it doesn’t take any more time.  It is about still doing what we are doing except that we actual do it; that we are present when we do what we do or see etc.  In many ways being mindful saves us time as we do not become distracted when we go about things.

Waking up

Sit on the side of your bed when you first rise and be with yourself for a few moments before starting your day.  Listen to your breathing go in and out, relax your body with each breath and just be.  Take as long or as short as you feel you can – even thirty seconds to begin with will serve you well.

Making tea/coffee

Having a morning cuppa is really [I think] one of the great pleasures in life; whether you make it yourself, have it made for you or buy it on the way to work.  Sit and experience the aroma of it, the taste and the warmth.  It will add to the enjoyment of your morning brew as well as centre you for what the day ahead will bring.

Walking out the door

How often in the mornings do we race out the door grabbing what we must on the way out?  Some days it can be like that as time gets away from us or we may have ‘words’ with another household member or cannot find all the bits to the children’s uniforms.  However, as you walk through your door on your way out to start your day, be mindful.  Pick up your car keys mindfully and with calmness, check you have what you need.  Pause and be still with yourself for a moment, listen to yourself breathe in and then out.

Mindfulness is something which is easy to do.  What is not easy is keeping it up and remembering to do it.  So often we move through our days acting out the past or future in our heads without fully engaging with what is going on in the present.

Try some of the above and see how it goes and if they make you feel a bit more centred.

Enjoy
